boho's story

Boho carries a variety of clothing, jewelry, art, furniture, art supplies, and more, including Fiestaware dinnerware and handmade soaps. We are located in the historic district of Hinton, WV, making us neighbors with many other fun and interesting merchants. At Boho, we also offer classes in stained-glass and free community art activities during Hinton’s Second Saturday events. Children are always welcome in Boho and receive a free book when they come along.

The concept for Boho began brewing in 2018. Our owner, Kristal Straub, started thinking about her life and what she wanted to do with her extra time outside of her role as an addiction therapist. Kristal recognized a need for color and vibrance in her community. As a result, she opened the doors to Boho on March 9, 2019, and began offering something different that reflects her free-spiritedness. Boho’s slogan “Live Life Out Loud” was lovingly inspired by Kristal’s husband, Carl, who is also our stained-glass instructor. When Kristal was getting her first tattoo, Carl posted a photo of the experience online, quipping that he was watching Kristal “live her life out loud.”

Roots

“Boho,” short for Bohemian, is not merely a fashion trend, a type of home décor, or short-lived fleeting style. Instead, it is an ethos that dates back over 200 years ago starting as a counterculture in the 19th century. Bohemian ideology was one representing an unconventional and liberating lifestyle shown in ways of style, manner, and more. Boho also created an Aesthetic Movement that, much like the philosophy, did not follow the traditional norms of society but instead focused its energy on looser fits, vintage designs, hand-sewn embellishments, mixed designs, and ethnic flares. Since then, the Boho counterculture’s philosophy and style has passed from one decade to the next, preserving its essence of free-spiritedness and alternative aesthetics.
